Starting in September, I'm going to start making some desktop wallpapers and other incentives in exchange for small micro donations. I know that donations often come off as a little trite, but every little bit helps! If I can cut down on some of my teaching hours, I could easily update more, and I thought donations would be a nice way to say,

Even in Arcadia Volume 1 print edition now available

You can buy Volume 1 of Even in Arcadia in my store. There’s also a Limited Sketch Edition if you’re interested.

Well, I’ve sure been a stranger, haven’t I? I was hit by the biggest distraction like an invisible brick wall that I didn’t plan for. My wonderful, supportive partner in crime just graduated from the Capilano Commercial Animation Program last week. Being the good girlfriend (or I try to be), I was with him from the time I got off of work until early in the morning helping with his grad show preparations. For almost 2 weeks. It was tough, to say the least.

Now, however, I’m back on schedule. I will have a new page to update late tonight/early tomorrow morning for our regular Tuesday update. I’m also extremely happy to announce that the first volume of Even in Arcadia is in print. The first printing is only 50 books and I’m already halfway out, so if you’d like one I’d suggest sooner rather than later :)

There is also a Limited Sketch Edition available, but those are going extremely fast. I’ve been live updating my sketches to my tumblr.  I’ve really enjoyed doing the sketches, I feel like it’s a way to get acquainted with my characters again.

 

Lastly, I will be at VanCAF at the end of May hanging out with cool comic people like Sam Logan, Jeph Jacques and Christopher Hastings. If you’re in the Vancouver area, or can make it here, I suggest you come for this show. It’s free to attend and it’s going to be AMAZING. I’m also happy to show some people around for the weekend.

Even in Arcadia in Black & White… MANGA STYLE

“Wait” you might be saying to yourself at this moment, “why isn’t this comic in colour anymore?”

Well, dear reader, Even in Arcadia will be going black and white from now on. If you have taken to reading the comments, my twitter or the blog section of this website, you will know that colouring every page takes far too long to be able to regularly update this comic. So, for now it will be in black and white. Will this mean more updates? Probably. As to how many, I’m not sure yet. I want to try out this process for a few weeks before I decide.

But, don’t despair. The first issue of Even in Arcadia will be put into print shortly, and it will be entirely in colour. In about 6-8 months from now, when the second issue comes out, it will also be in colour. So the online version will remain black and white, and free to read.

I hope this doesn’t put you off too much, it was a difficult decision to come to, but in the end it was make a change or stop making the comic unfortunately. I’m always overly ambitious to start out with, but don’t worry, I’m learning. Thanks for being patient with me, I really appreciate it.

Don’t Rush It – Nanowrimo Week 1

I’m doing the Nanowrimo challenge this month (because I’m a crazy person) mostly because I’ve had this idea for a great comic and wanted to incentive to get it written. It’s very different from Even in Arcadia in that it’s not speculative fiction at all. The script is about University students, one of which who has a passion for being a professional Starcraft 2 player.

Each week I thought I would post my writing to see what people think. I would really like some serious feedback, but not on the prose. Let me explain what I mean: because this is going to be a comic, the quality of the prose is irrelevant, I’m looking more for feedback on the characters, scenes, dialogue and general feel of the story. I’m not writing it as a traditional comic script, so the final comic may differ quite a bit from what I’m writing now.

On Saturday nights I’ll make a new update. I’m posting to my blog across three sites (Epidigm.net, the Atheneum and the Even in Arcadia mainpage), but I will see the comments no matter where you make them. The post on the Atheneum will be open for the public, so you don’t have to worry about donating.

The working title for the story is Don’t Rush It. I may or may not change this in the future!

It’s Thanksgiving!

So… I’m Canadian and here in my large yet under populated country Thanksgiving is the second weekend of October, with our big dinners happening on either Sunday or Monday. If I were a true comicking loner it wouldn’t be a problem, but I have a HUGE family. Of course, my parents are also divorced so I have to have two holidays of everything or risk hurting their feelings. Therefore, the regular Tuesday update for next week will change to Thursday! Autumn is always that weird season where there’s a number of holidays messing up my schedule, but the last scheduled break for this year is in December, during Christmas/New Years.

EiA pg 33 Delay

I promised to only miss the Tuesday deadline for Even in Arcadia during planned vacations or extenuating circumstances. Well, unfortunately extenuated circumstances have presented themselves.

I have a viral eye infection. It makes it pretty painful to look at anything, particularly a screen, for any length of time. As such, the next page is nowhere near done. I anticipate that my illness won’t last long (the kind doctors have provided me with some medical relief), but it will put a delay on the page. I would like to say I will have it up on Thursday, but it might be as late as Friday or Saturday if my eyes still hurt. Then we can get back to our regular schedule!

Thank you so much for your patience guys! I’m normally a very healthy person, so getting sick is a very trying ordeal… Plus the separation from my sweet sweet drawing addiction.

The Atheneum

Every month there will be a new wallpaper to download for your computer and/or cellphone

When I was a young and impressionable teenage girl I had a small seed of a dream. I wanted to make webcomics like the ones that I enjoyed reading during the lazy hours of IT class while trying to avoid the mind numbingly boring information on network architecture. I would read Megatokyo and be amazed that people would come back to the site a few times a week to read the pages as they updated. Then, as I have been prone to do, I told myself it was perfectly possible for me to do that too and even be successful at it.

Thus began my long and sometimes difficult journey into the world of comics that has led me here. I love Even in Arcadia. I love drawing, writing, sketching, promoting, doing all the boring bureaucratic paperwork for this comic. To be honest, I want to do more of it, more often. ↓ Read the rest of this entry…

The Process of Making Even in Arcadia

Even in Arcadia is such a fun comic to work on that I thought I would document my process.  I’ve been spending the last 5 months or so really trying to get down the process of making a page. I’m sure there are some steps that can be more streamlined, but right now this is producing such wonderful pages that I’m hesitant to mess with a good thing.
